FBR compliance for salaried individuals, freelancers, overseas Pakistanis & SMEs

FBR registration

NTN registration in Pakistan

Your NTN is your identity with FBR. For individuals it is linked to your CNIC, and you need it before you can file a return and join the Active Taxpayer List.

Get my NTN

Who needs an NTN?

  • Salaried people whose income is above the taxable limit
  • Freelancers and IT consultants earning from abroad
  • Shopkeepers, traders and business owners
  • Anyone buying property or a vehicle who wants filer rates
  • Overseas Pakistanis with income or property in Pakistan

Documents you usually need

  • Copy of your CNIC
  • A mobile number registered in your own name
  • An active email address
  • Your income source details — salary slip, freelance profile or business address
  • For a business: ownership or rent papers and a utility bill of the premises

How registration works

Most delays come from a SIM not registered in your name or a wrong income category. We fill it correctly the first time.

  • Create your profile on the FBR Iris portal with your CNIC, mobile and email
  • Verify the codes FBR sends to your phone and email
  • Fill the registration form (Form 181) with your income and address details
  • Submit — your CNIC becomes your NTN once FBR accepts it

Common questions

Is my CNIC my NTN?

For individuals, yes — once you are registered on Iris your CNIC number works as your NTN.

Does registering mean I have to pay tax?

Not by itself. Registration lets you file a return. Tax depends on your income, and many people owe little or nothing.

Can I register from abroad?

Yes. Overseas Pakistanis can register online. We handle it over WhatsApp.
